The District is pursuing full-scale ocean water desalination. Trussell Tech supported the District in water assessment, planning, permitting, and design of their demonstration facility. The firm assessed all water quality issues and data including feed, treated water at all stages, and concentrate discharge with respect to CDPH and RWQCB regulatory limits. Trussell Tech established water quality goals to ensure compliance and to address emerging concerns like CECs and algal species. The firm developed innovative pre-treatment strategies including high rate GMF, which was demonstrated at pilot-scale during harmful algal bloom event to be superior to Arkal disc filters in mitigating MF fouling and, in a project funded by the WateReuse Research Foundation (WRRF), preformed chloramines to prevent biofouling. The firm also began the development of a cost-effective strategy for post treatment, primary and secondary disinfection.
